Boeing Faces Renewed Scrutiny After India Dreamliner Crash

The Boeing company faces new challenges because an Air India 787 Dreamliner crashed immediately after departure from Ahmedabad which resulted in more than 240 fatalities. The Dreamliner model suffered its first fatal accident since its market introduction in 2009.

The plane crash led to a 5% decline in Boeing stock prices while it also revived safety-related issues. The Dreamliner experienced battery fires in 2013 which led to a grounding but the current investigation has not determined the cause of this week’s accident.

The 737 Max line continues to be a major point of contention because of its two fatal accidents during 2018 and 2019. The faulty sensor caused the jets to experience uncontrollable nose-down pitching which resulted in worldwide grounding until software updates became available.

A Max 9 jet experienced a midair panel blowout during flight which led regulators to establish a monthly production limit of 38 aircraft. The Justice Department has started legal proceedings against Boeing for past safety violations by reaching a settlement to avoid prosecution.

The company reported an $11.8 billion loss during 2024 which increased its total post-2019 losses to $35 billion. CEO Kelly Ortberg stated that stabilization efforts continue while Q1 2025 showed a reduced $31 million loss.
