Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese predicted on Friday that the United States will keep its 10% baseline tariff on Australian exports despite other nations negotiating better trade terms before July 9.
During his Sydney event Albanese predicted that the 10% tariff rate would remain in effect. The current tariff rate Australia faces is better than what other countries must endure according to Albanese.
The July 9 deadline will mainly impact countries with high tariffs and unresolved trade disputes according to Albanese. The Australian government continues to pursue a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump after Trump canceled their G7 sideline meeting because of Middle East tensions.
The strong bilateral relationship between Australia and the United States has not led to an official exemption from Trump’s reciprocal tariff plan. The ongoing discussions will lead to additional international meetings between Australia and other nations during the upcoming year according to Albanese.
The U.S. will distribute final letters about new trade agreements while Canberra maintains its diplomatic efforts against Washington while setting realistic expectations about avoiding the global tariff changes.
