The United States President Donald Trump has given TikTok another 90-day extension to sell its U.S. assets to American investors while the negotiations are ongoing.
The executive order was made public by Trump on Truth Social and the new deadline is set for September 17. “President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said. “This extension allows time to finalize a deal that secures American data.”
The administration has now delayed the enforcement of the congressionally mandated ban for the third time since January and the U.S. Supreme Court upheld it. The talks to spin off TikTok into a U.S.-controlled entity broke down in April after China withdrew its support following Trump’s tariff escalation.
The app, popular with millions of Americans, has become a geopolitical flashpoint in the broader U.S.-China tech rivalry. The lawmakers believe that TikTok poses a national security risk, while the supporters believe that an American-led restructuring could preserve the platform’s future.
The administration is hoping to close a deal that meets the bipartisan security concerns and avoid a politically fraught shutdown of one of the country’s most-used apps with the new deadline.
